James Y. Suen, M.D.

Dr. James Y. Suen is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He is also the Director of the Arkansas Cancer Research Center at the same University. Dr. Suen completed his otolaryngology training in 1973. He then did an advanced Senior Fellowship in head and neck surgery at the MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute where he was elevated to the Faculty after seven months. He returned to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and became the Chair of the Department in 1974.

His main interests are in head and neck tumors, vascular lesions of the head and neck, laryngeal problems and laser surgery.

He has won multiple awards including the Distinguished Faculty Award from the University of Arkansas College of Medicine and the MD Anderson Cancer Center. He has been listed in every issue of "Best Doctors in America". In 1993-94 he was the President of the American Society for Head and Neck Surgeons. He presently serves on the Council for Advanced Training in Head and Neck Surgery. He is President Clinton’s otolaryngologist.

He was on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery until 2001. He is on the Editorial Board of the Asian Journal of Surgery, Head and Neck Journal and the ENT Journal. He has published over 100 journal articles and textbook chapters. He is the co-Editor of six textbooks including Cancer of the Head and Neck with Dr. Eugene Myers and also Hemangiomas and Vascular Malformations of the Head and Neck with Dr. Milton Waner.

Dr. Suen has had an interest in vascular lesions of the head and neck for the past 30 years. He saw them as a challenge equal to head and neck cancer. He has tackled some of the most difficult vascular lesions of the head and neck with great success. Many of these patients have been told "Don’t let anyone operate on you because you would die on the table," or "It can’t be surgically treated."

Dr. Milton Waner, who was trained by Dr. Suen, had this to say: "Dr. Suen is one of two individuals who had a profound influence on my career. He is the most brilliant, meticulous surgeon from whom I have ever learned. His skill, techniques, and attention to detail, are responsible for many of the procedures we are now able to perform. Needless to say, without his influence, many of these procedures would not have been possible."
