Dr. Paula E. North serves as Director of the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Vascular Anomalies Center. She is a pediatric pathologist and an Associate Professor of Pathology and Otolaryngology at the University of Arkansas for Medical
Sciences. Her practice is primarily at Arkansas Children's Hospital where she also serves as Director of Clinical and Molecular Pathology and as Vice-Chief of Pediatric Pathology. Dr. North received her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Vanderbilt University and her M.D. at UAMS. She is board certified in both Anatomic and Clinical pathology, with subspecialty boards in Pediatric Pathology, and has been a staff pathologist at ACH since 1995.
She is active in research as well as clinical practice, and directs the collaborative research activities of the Center. Dr. North’s clinical expertise in the histopathological diagnosis of vascular anomalies of all types is internationally recognized, and her opinion is widely sought by dermatologists, surgeons, and pathologists alike. Her research, both basic and clinical, continues to have major impact in the field of vascular anomalies, including recent discoveries of the GLUT1 marker for infantile hemangioma and demonstration of the fundamental relationship between the vessels of infantile hemangioma and those of the placenta. Dr. North is a member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the Society for Pediatric Pathology, the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies, Sigma Xi, and Alpha Omega Alpha. She is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation. |
