General Information The head and neck surgery division of the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is the specialty that manages benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck. Exceptions excluded from treatment by head and neck surgeons in this area include brain tumor surgery and cervical spine problems. Head and neck surgeons can provide comprehensive treatment of all disorders in the head and neck region with ready access to a team of practitioners in multiple allied specialties. Head and Neck Oncology Head and neck oncology refers to the practice of removing malignancies from the head and neck region. Ninety-five percent of all malignant tumors of the head and neck are squamous cell carcinomas. The primary recognized risk factors for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma are tobacco and alcohol abuse. The traditional approach to head and neck cancer has been surgery followed by radiation therapy. Over the last decade, advances in chemotherapy and radiation therapy have allowed us to treat many head and neck cancers with lesser or no surgical procedures. Optimum head and neck cancer care is provided when it is approached in a multi-disciplinary fashion. Treating specialists include the surgeon, the radiation therapist, the medical oncologist, the neuro-radiologist, the head and neck pathologist, and other affiliated allied health specialties.
